Is that what people usually call them in Montana? Back home we call them Prairie Crocus (or just Crocus).

Clare, we usually just called them Crocus as well. They were usually my Mother's Day present to my Mom when I was younger. I didn't realize they were so widespread until I started researching for this post so I figured I had better get the right species for the photo.
